When not in use, is it better to store a sewing machine with the needle in the up or down position or take the needle out?

As sewing machine pressure foot tensions are default set for silks, how would you test your best tension for the pressure foot?

I’ve pressed fleece. I do it quickly and not on really high heat. It will melt the fibers otherwise.

with dull needles, can you see it by looking at the needle or is it just when you sew? I’m not great at keeping a record of how long I have used the needle for.

I use serpentine often – also dont use stitches that go backwards to complete the pattern

When you start sewing at the edge of fabric, how can I prevent the fabric from being pulled down into the machine?
