Hi Virginia, What pattern are you using? And what steps of the directions are you having trouble with? If you’d like to provide more details, I can try to help!
In the meantime, this video is a sew-along for a specific pattern (Simplicity 8962 by Mimi G Style), so while your pattern might be different, this video takes you through all the steps of constructing a jacket, and might help answer some of your questions.

I have a Janome Memory Craft 3000 that I purchased in the year 2000. 22 years ago! and I still love the machine. I can’t vouch for the current models, but mine has been a gem. I had a lower cost Bernina before that and it was so bad I literally just finally busted the thing up and pitched it.
