Blind Hem by Machine
National Sewing Circle EditorsLearn how to use the blind hem stitch on your sewing machine and learn how to hem your own pants easily. Kristie J Smith shows you how!
Kristie breaks down the construction of the blind hem stitch that most machines come built in with. You can use a specialty blind hem foot to make this even easier. The blind hem foot has a blade in the center and looks like an edgestitch foot, which can also be used for this technique.
Finish the raw edge of the garment either using a serger, zigzag stitch, or fold it to the wrong side and press. Then press the hem where you would like it to sit so you have a crease at the finished lower edge.
With the garment right side out, Kristie demonstrates how to flip the hem so that you will be stitching just through the hem allowance with the straight stitch portion of the blind hem stitch, and the zigzag portion of the stitch bites into the tiniest amount of the garment fabric.
Align the blade of the blind stitch foot (or edgestitch foot) with the fold created, and stitch the circumference of the hem. Use a matching thread to make the hem stitching nearly invisible. It’s as easy as that to sew a blind hem on the machine using the blind hem stitch.
