From the multiple thread spools on the top, to loopers instead of a bobbin on the bottom, there’s much about a serger that differs from a conventional sewing machine. In this video, ZJ Humbach shows you how to use a serger by taking you through the different parts and showing you the many different ways you can use it. She also shares her tips on where you should buy your serger and why, as well as whether you should consider a 3-thread, 4-thread, 5-thread, or even an 8-thread machine.

ZJ also shows samples of a serger being used to finish fabric edges using rolled hems, blind hems, and many others. She shows how it can be used for several different decorative purposes including lace application and the use of thicker thread, which can’t always be used in conventional machines. While people typically associate using a serger with knit fabric, ZJ explains how it can be used for other fabrics as well, and explains which stitches as best for which fabric and why.
