Whether you like to wear one every time you cook, or you want to dress up for an upcoming dinner party, this vintage inspired apron is the perfect project. Jessica Giardino will show you everything you need to know on how to make an apron, from pattern pieces to embellishments, to construction and finishing.

Pattern Pieces

Before you can begin learning how to make an apron it’s important to have the right pattern pieces. Jessica explains which pattern piece you will need to download and cut out as well as how to arrange the pattern pieces on the fabric. She also explains additional pieces needed for the apron as well as how to customize certain pieces to your personal style or to compliment the fabric.

Embellishments

Embellishing is a great way to personalize an apron as well as many other sewing projects. Jessica shows you several ways you can embellish your apron and as well as different materials you can use to do it.

Construction

Learning how to make an apron doesn’t have to be difficult. Jessica takes you step-by-step through how to construct the apron, giving expert tips along the way. She show how to tackle the curved seams of the neck band using pinking shears to make sure everything turns out nice and smooth. She explains how to attach the neck band into the top seam of the apron front so the final project is nice and finished on the right and wrong sides. Jessica also explains how to audition pocket placement on the lower apron front, how to easily gather the lower apron and how to attach the gathered edge to the waist band. Apron construction finishes up with attaching the upper and lower sections and adding the tie.

Tools to Make Things Easier

There are many sewing tools on the market today that make certain steps of the sewing process easier, and Jessica uses several. Pressing guides are a great tool to use when you need to press under a specific seam allowance along a long area of fabric. Pressing guides come in a variety of sizes and materials and Jessica shows you her favorite. She also shows you a useful tool to use that helps you keep even, consistent seam allowances while sewing.
