Learn how to make a water bottle sling with an extra cell phone pocket, so you can easily carry the essentials without the need for a purse or backpack. Nicki LaFoille walks you through the process step by step to sew your own water bottle sling.

This DIY water bottle sling is especially perfect for kids who are liable to lose a water bottle, but need to have water available to them, and don’t want to be burdened by carrying a bag.

Nicki gives dimensions for the four outer fabric pieces and two lining pieces needed for this water bottle carrier project. Nicki uses canvas for the outer fabric and cotton for the lining, but you can use cotton for the entire project if you choose. You will also need some lightweight interfacing, 4” of ¼” elastic and some webbing for the strap. Or create a strap using fabric, if you choose.

Nicki demonstrates how to create the pocket with an elastic upper edge, to create volume and dimension to the pocket. Then you will stitch the outside of the water bottle sling, and stitch the lower edge of the tube into the bottom circle.

The process is the same for the lining, except you will leave an opening in the vertical seam, to turn the project right side out. Attach the webbing to the upper edge of the tube, and stitch it to the lining at the upper edge. Turn the project right side out through the opening left in the lining. Press and topstitch the upper edge, and the water bottle sling is complete.
