Kimono Robe
Nicki LaFoilleLearn how to sew a pattern free kimono-style robe using just measurements from your body. Nicki LaFoille walks you through the process step by step.
First, Nicki begins by explaining what body measurements are needed to create the kimono robe. Using simple calculations, create your own pattern pieces for the robe, which include a front, back, sleeves, and a collar.
After cutting out the robe pieces, Nicki demonstrates how to sew the shoulder seams and attach the sleeves. Nicki recommends pressing the hem on the sleeve before stitching the underarm seam. Then Nicki demonstrates how to stitch the sleeve and side seam at once using the flat sleeve insertion technique. Clip into the underarm point to avoid drag lines when the garment is turned right side out. After finishing the seam allowances, Nicki demonstrates how to finish the sleeve and lower hems with topstitching.
With the body of the robe finished, Nicki demonstrates how to prep and attach the collar to the robe front opening. Nicki discusses tips for reducing bulk at side seams and at the back collar edge, especially if using heavier weight fabric, such as flannel or terry cloth.
If using terry cloth to make this robe into a bathrobe, check out Tips for Working With Terry Fabrics.
Folding the collar over to encase the seam allowances, topstitch on the collar all the way around to finish the robe.
Nicki discusses options for embellishments, such as patch pockets and belt loops, to give unique flair to the robe.
Stitch the robe in lightweight fabric and use it as a swim coverup, or use heavier weight fabric to create a cozy robe for cooler winter months.
