You will need three fabrics – gripper (preferably by the yard), terry cloth for the outer fabric and an interlining microfiber soaker fabric.     In sewing classes, I was taught that the only time you use double thread in the needle is for sewing on buttons and snaps. It really surprised me to see you use double thread here to stitch the circles together.
